Transcript of my podcast episode (2)
Hello, you! Welcome to the second episode of mini ENGSPRESSO. I hope that you’ve somehow survived this 7-month break without any new episodes, and you’re ready to listen to me again! Before we dive into today’s expressions, I’d like to tell you a certain anecdote connected with my podcast.
So I had met this girl with her dog at our local park a few times before, but we had never chatted that much. Then one day we actually started talking. And in the middle of our conversation, she looked at me a bit suspiciously, and said: ‘Wait… do you have a twin stranger? Because you look so familiar.’
I laughed because obviously, I wasn’t aware of any twin strangers in my life. But she was convinced she had seen me somewhere before. So, a little puzzled, I told her what I did, I mentioned my socials and my podcast.
She scrolled her phone for a few seconds, found my old cover of the podcast with my picture in it, and said: ‘That’s it! That’s where I know you from — I have seen your podcast before.’
And you know, that was the first time somebody had almost recognised me from my podcast! That moment just hit different. It felt a bit surreal. Now I wonder what other anecdotes this podcast may bring in the future. Who knows, maybe you’ll be part of them?
So having shared that little story with you, now it’s time to teach you another two expressions!
The first expression for today is AT RANDOM. If something is done at random, it is done without any specific pattern, order, or reason.
For instance: I couldn’t decide which book to read, so I just picked one at random. Now, repeat after me.
The translation is: Nie mogłam zdecydować, którą książkę przeczytać, więc wybrałam jedną losowo.
Another example: Instead of choosing a film carefully, he just clicked on one at random.
Zamiast starannie wybrać film, po prostu kliknął na pierwszy lepszy losowo.
The second expression is TO LEARN STH BY HEART. It means to memorise something completely so that you can recall it without looking.
For instance: She had to learn the whole speech by heart before the presentation.
Musiała nauczyć się całej przemowy na pamięć przed prezentacją.
Another example: When I was a kid, I learned my favourite poem by heart and can still recite it today.
Kiedy byłem dzieckiem, nauczyłem się na pamięć mojego ulubionego wiersza i do dziś mogę go recytować.
And now it’s time for your ENGSPRESSO to go!
Our context for the phrases is:
If you had learnt the lyrics by heart, you could now sing any part of the song at random.
Jeśli nauczyłabyś się tekstu na pamięć, teraz umiałabyś zaśpiewać jakąkolwiek część tej piosenki losowo.
Well done! If you need the transcript of today’s mini ENGSPRESSO, you’ll find it in the description of the episode or on my website angielskidokawy.pl.
And last but not least, I want to remind you that I still run conversational lessons for women starting from level B1, so if you’d like to practise your English with me, just drop me a message on Instagram or Facebook, or simply send me an email.
Thanks for listening and talk to you another time!
