Transcript of my podcast episode (31)
Hi there! This is the 31st episode of ENGSPRESSO, and today we’re starting the second season of the series. Are you keeping up with me or do you have some backlog and need to catch up on the rest of the episodes? Remember that it doesn’t matter whether you’re just beginning your adventure with my podcast, or you’ve listened to all the episodes so far. You can either listen to ENGSPRESSO episodes randomly or follow their order – whatever floats your boat! In either case, you’ll learn a lot.
Let me remind you that in episode 30, I had a guest from England, Stephen, who runs his own news-related podcast (SEND7) – go back to the previous episode if you want to find out more. Also, please let me know how you like that episode. Do you like Stephen’s voice and his British accent? I can’t wait to get your feedback! Feel free to message me on Instagram.
And this time, I’m continuing as usual, and you’ll hear all the examples in my voice. So let me teach you another two expressions!
The first one is AS LONG AS / SO LONG AS. If you say that something is the case as long as or so long as something else is the case, you mean that it is only the case if the second thing is the case. Well, this definition sounds too complicated, doesn’t it? Don’t worry, you should just remember that a synonym of the phrase 'as long as’ is the simple word 'if’.
For instance: As long as you’re consistent, you can achieve anything you want. Now, repeat after me.
The translation is: O ile jesteś konsekwentny, możesz osiągnąć cokolwiek zechcesz.
Another example: I don’t mind lending you my car as long as you promise to return it with a full tank of petrol.
Nie mam nic przeciwko, żeby pożyczyć ci samochod, jeśli tylko obiecasz oddać go z pełnym bakiem paliwa.
The second expression is TO BROADEN ONE’S HORIZONS. It means 'to increase the range of things that someone knows about or has experienced’. We can also say TO EXPAND / TO WIDEN ONE’S HORIZONS.
For instance: Taking up a new hobby can help us broaden our horizons.
Zajęcie się nowym hobby może pomóc nam poszerzyć horyzonty.
Another example: You will surely broaden your horizons by getting to know other languages, cultures, and perspectives.
Na pewno poszerzysz swoje horyzonty, poznając inne języki, kultury i inne punkty widzenia.
And now it’s time for your ENGSPRESSO to go!
Our context for the phrases is:
As long as you travel, you’re bound to broaden your horizons.
O ile tylko będziesz podróżować, na pewno poszerzysz swoje horyzonty (dosł. na pewno tak się stanie / to musi się stać).
Brilliant! It was worth repeating the phrases after me, wasn’t it? It always seems to be easier when you only listen to the phrases and try to repeat them in your head rather than aloud. But once you open your mouth, it may be a bit more problematic than you thought (if you know what I mean ;)). Anyway, don’t get discouraged and practise as much as you can. The more you practise, the easier it will be, and one day you’ll be able to repeat every single thing I say!
